(01/03) - My Bureaucratic Battle
UI DESIGNUI/UX CASE STUDIES

…Birthed a Solution That Will Revolutionize Immigration Management in Italy.
If you’ve ever dreamed of living in Italy, as I did about four years ago, you might not realize that its immense beauty, rich culture, invaluable history, and unique gastronomy come with an unexpected challenge — a monster lurking behind all that charm: bureaucracy.
A Digital Bridge to a New Life
Millions of people worldwide embark on the adventure of settling in a new country, and with that comes a tangled web of procedures and documents.
In this case study, I want to immerse you in my own experience, which, without me realizing it, became the main reason I created a solution that, as the title suggests, aims to revolutionize immigration management in Italy.
I’ll take you through everything from the initial design phase to the conceptualization of a digital solution that promises to ease an immense burden for newcomers. Get ready for a narrative that explores not just the “how” but also the “why” behind every design decision.
My Personal Story, a Global Challenge
When I arrived in Italy, I was full of enthusiasm to start a new chapter in my life… I think that’s what all immigrants around the world have felt. The reality of managing my permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) hit me like a cold wave. I vividly remember the endless queues at the Questura (police headquarters), the incomprehensible forms filled with legal jargon, the conflicting information I received from different sources, and, of course, the language barrier that turned every interaction into an act of faith.
The anxiety of waiting for a crucial letter, the uncertainty of whether I had submitted the correct document, the fear of missing a deadline… all of this added to the already stressful experience of adapting to a new country. Feeling lost and disempowered in such a vital process is a sensation I wouldn’t wish on anyone. This personal experience was my main motivation.
